The use of Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of tendon problems continues to increase, as does the evidence behind its use. It is especially useful in the setting of Achilles Tendon and Plantar Fascia issues that will not respond to standard treatment with physiotherapy and stretches.
Mr. O’Flaherty has been using shockwave in his NHS practice for over a year. We are pleased to say that it is also covered by the majority of private health insurance companies and can be obtained via this route as well. Mr. O’Flaherty carries this out privately in Malone Medical Chambers (www.malonemedicalchambers.com) on the Malone Road in Belfast. This handy location has parking available and is easy to get to from all over the province.
It is recommended that patients attend initially for a consultation prior to undergoing treatment, as it is not always the appropriate first step and may not be suitable in some cases. Treatment involves three sessions over the course of three weeks. Some patients may require one or two more, but this is uncommon. The first session typically takes 10 minutes to allow for consenting and discussion of what it entails. The further two sessions typically taking only five minutes. It is recommended that a relative/friend provide the transport on the day so as not to have an issue with driving afterwards.
Recent evidence has shown that in patients who have plantar fascia and achilles issues that aren’t settling, up to 80% can expect an improvement in their symptoms using shockwave therapy.
